Here is the new hat. I put earflaps on this one too - to make sure his little ears stay warm and the hat stays on. Okay, pattern time:
Using worsted weight yarn and size 8 mm hook.
Chain 2.
Single crochet four times in second chain from hook.
(Place a marker in the last stitch of this round and each new round.)
Round 2 - sc without making any increases (4 stitches)
Round 3 - Increase by making 2 sc in each stitch (8 stitches)
Round 4 - sc in the first stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch, repeat all the way around to the stitch marker (12 stitches)
Round 5 - sc in the first two stitches, 2 sc in the third all the way around (16 stitches)
Round 6 - 2 sc in every 4th stitch (20 stitches)
Round 7 - 2 sc in every 5th stitch (24 stitches)
Round 8 - 2 sc in every 6th stitch (28 stitches)
Continue increasing in this manner, until the hat looks like it will fit your child. (For Charles I continued to round 14, ending with 52 stitches.)
When it is large enough, stop increasing and just single crochet in each stitch for as many rounds as it take to cover your child's head (Charles' hat was 10 rounds without increases).
EarflapsRow 1 - sc in the next 8 stitches, ch 1, turn work.
Row 2 - sc over the first 8 stitches
Row 3 - decrease by crocheting the first two stitches of the row together and the last two stiches of the row together (6 stitches)
Continue decreasing on every other row until there are just two stitches left in the row. Then chain stitch to make the ties, about 20-25 chain stitches.
Begin the second earflap, in the same manner on the opposite side of the hat.
Wah-lah!
I've never written out a pattern before....hope that all makes some sort of sense!
