Ah, yes, the lovely art of changing patterns. In my experience you cannot begin until you have ingested at least two aspirin, but then I have a hard time doing simple math. Which leads me to the second required tool: a calculator!
Well, I just wrote (and deleted) a whole post on how to adjust the pattern and realized I was working from the bottom as you would with knitting, not with crochet. I have to admit I have never designed a hat in crochet. So let's here it: how are you adjusting the pattern?! Do you start with the same number of stitches as the baby hat that are joined in the round and then just increase longer? Hmm...I just can't picture how it would work. Let us know!

Yes! Exactly! Only I wasn't very good at guessing how many more rounds I should increase it. So at first I increased to 72 stitches, though the baby hat calls for 36. That was way too big. So I pulled it back to 56 stitches which is appearing to be about the right size. I've done about 4 or 5 rounds at 56 stitches so far. I'm sure I'll have to add more rounds than the baby hat calls for as well.
I don't really have a method to the madness. It's much more trial and error for me. Of course there's plenty of error, but I was glad that when I pulled back my project it wasn't all the way. It feels kind of good to start again with a round of 56 stitches rather than at o again!
The nice thing about crochet is that you can lay things against you and guess much more accurately than you can with knitting!
