Decisions, Decisions

Well, I've almost decided - as long as Miss Elaine doesn 't object - I've almost decided for sure to get a knitting lesson from Elaine at our next weekend. I was going to wait until next year to embrace the knitting scene, in order to focus on perfecting my crocheting abilities, but I find the lure of the needles too much for me! Plus if I'm going to have such an accomplished teacher right there with me, I need to take advantage of that!

So these are my questions: what project/pattern would you pick for a virgin knitter? What weight/type of yarn should I have with me? What size needles should I invest in first (maybe just one or two sizes)? Should I start with circular or straight needles? And anything else I may need to know that I'm not even aware of!

If I know the answer to these questions, then I can come prepared to master a new skill. Of course, you could just pick an easy beginner pattern for me when I get there since I know you have loads of patterns, but I'll bring the rest of the loot. Just point me in the right direction!
