Learning to Knit

I went shopping for our godson's birthday earlier this week. I went to a fabulous little store called Tuesday Morning - it's very similiar to TJ Maxx - lots of little odds and ends at supposedly discounted prices. The discounts are low enough for me usually, so I stick to the clearance racks when looking for myself. It is, however, a great place to find unique gifts. And I guess it's really not that expensive.

Anyway (this does have something to do with yarn crafts), as I was browsing I happened upon some yarn which was discounted. I got some lovely Homespun baby yarn in yellow (it's very soft) for $1.50/skein, and I bought another skein of thin white yarn because it was only $.99!

I also found some knitting needles, appropriate size for a novice for $4, but I didn't buy them yet...is that a good deal? AND there was this really cute kit for beginng knitters that came with all the yarn, needles, and instructions needed to make this adorable baby hat and booties - unfortunately there were only 2 left and neither of them had all the stuff they were supposed. In fact, the needles were missing from both kits. What a bummer! I was going to get it, thinking this would be the perfect project to start with, but alas...

Of course I probably could have purchased what was there for half price and bought the needles myself...but I didn't. Okay that's my latest knitting story. I will continue to work on Charles' blanket though probably not much tonight. We're going to Stations of the Cross and then to the neighbors' for a night full of boardgame playing! I'll keep you posted on the blanket!

$4 for knitting needles can be a good deal, but it depends on what kind they are. If they're wood or bamboo - but them immediately!!! These are by far the best needles, but I suppose that is my own opinion; I have heard others say steel is the best. Either way wood and bamboo needles are more expensive, probably about $8 per pair. If they're steel you're saving a couple bucks. If they're plastic, they're not worth it. I had to plastic needles yesterday for a project because they didn't have any others in the size I needed. It would be ok, if they were cheap, but they were still $7! Ridiculous!! And also, depending on the size you need, you can probably steal some of mine because I have several duplicates.

I say get the Michael's 40% off coupon out of the Sunday paper and use them for the bamboo needles. That's how I got my collection ;-)
