"Work-from-home" Day

That's what my boss called it when he left me a message on my cell this morning. And it's no wonder! The weatherman was not lying, and we have a real verified blizzard here today. A snow emergency it's called and even the university suspended classes until noon tomorrow. Both of Peter's tests were postponed until next week.

So I have gotten in some crochet time. Charles' blanket is getting longer and longer, little by little. When Peter gets back from playing Nintendo at the neighbors' maybe we'll pop in a movie. I rarely seem to just watch a movie anymore - I'm almost always crocheting while the movie plays, which adds up to a lot of crochet time!

I think I'll bake some chocolate chip cookies before I we start that movie though!

I have a yarn question that I keep forgetting to ask: how do you figure out the weight of a yarn if it doesn't have that little skein symbol with the weight number on it? When I try to substitute yarns, I'm often finding that some labels don't have a yarn weight written on it. Any tips?

The gauge should be a good indicator. If you look at the gauges on each of the labels, you would want them to match. Or you could look at the gauge on the pattern and make sure it the yarns gauge matches it. For example, I went into the yarn store this weekend with a pattern that called for angora, but I didn't want it to be fuzzy, so I asked for help finding something different. She looked at the pattern's gauge, which said 5 stitches to the inch, so we found a yarn that had the same gauge listed on the label. Does that make sense? I hope that helps!
